How to Add Channels to Your Amazon Prime Account
If you are an Amazon Prime member resident in the United States, you can now subscribe to premium television channels. These allow you to view even more TV shows through Amazon Video. So, if you have always wanted to see Homeland on Showtime, sing along to Fleetwood Mac on Qello Concerts, or join the Power Yoga class on Gaia, now is your chance.
Available Channels
Premium channel subscriptions come in many different flavors designed to suit all tastes. They offer everything from movies to television shows (which Amazon Prime excels at) to concerts. Below are just some of the premium channels available through Amazon Prime. To see a full list of channels, you can visit the Amazon Video Subscriptions website.
- Showtime
- Starz
- Acorn TV
- Lifetime Movie Club
- Qello Concerts
- Smithsonian Earth
- Fear Factory
- HooplaKidz
Browsing Channels and Shows
You can browse through available channels on the Amazon Video Subscriptions website. They are nicely grouped by categories such as Featured, Recently Added, and Documentaries.
Select any of the channels for further details on which shows are available on them. Channels with many options display their shows in subcategories, making it even easier if you are searching for something specific.
For example, if you select Showtime, you will see those offerings in categories such as Series, Movies, Sports, and Comedy Specials.
Picking a specific show will provide you with all of the details. You can see a description of each show along with items like season information for series or the runtime and rating for movies.
Checking Trials and Prices
Almost every available channel currently offers a free trial period. These range depending on the channel. For instance, Starz offers a 7-day free trial and the subscription costs $8.99 per month after that. However, Showtime offers a 30-day free trial with an $8.99 monthly fee after the trial.
Subscribing to a Channel
You can subscribe to a premium channel in several different ways. With Amazon Video available on so many devices, you may see an option directly on your application to subscribe. Just look for the Subscriptions category and select a show. You will see the subscription offers with purchase details.
For those who do not see that option, for instance, on an iOS device, you must subscribe on the Amazon Video Subscriptions website. Once you are on the website, you can choose to subscribe to a channel by selecting it and then clicking the Learn More button. Details for free trials and costs after the trial expires are provided.
Another way to subscribe is if you are viewing a particular show or movie on the Amazon Video Subscriptions website. Next to the description is the subscription information for the channel that also includes the free trial and pricing details. When you select the button to subscribe, you will be taken to the main channel page to continue.
The Subscription Process
To subscribe from your device, you will then select Subscribe and Watch, Get Started, or Start Free Trial, depending on your application. Then just follow the instructions to complete the process.
If you are subscribing through the website, once you have made a selection and are ready to begin, simply click the relevant button to Start Your Free Trial. You will then be redirected to the sign-in page for your Amazon account.
You will see the details for the subscription, have the option to change your payment method or billing address, and will then click another button to continue. At the bottom are the terms of the agreement showing how your card will be charged.
Viewing and Canceling Subscriptions
After you have signed up for a subscription, you can easily view it within your account. Just select Your Account > Your Video Subscriptions. A list of your subscriptions will be displayed along with the renewal date, price, and option to cancel.
If you select the Cancel Subscription option, a pop-up box will display asking for confirmation. Be sure to cancel by the renewal date to avoid being charged the subscription price.
Limitations and Requirements
Please note that there are currently certain limitations for subscriptions to premium channels:
- You must be located in the United States or its territories
- Video subscriptions cannot be shared across Amazon accounts or profiles
- Existing channel subscriptions with your cable or independent provider cannot be used with Amazon Video
- Subscriptions may be subject to sales tax in certain states
- You can start and cancel a subscription at any time without additional fees
In order to use the subscription option with your Amazon Prime account, you must have one of the membership types shown in the image below. If you are not a current member, but would like to join, the current price is $99 per year. You can sign up directly on the Amazon Prime website and view a list of additional Amazon Prime benefits.
If you are an Amazon Prime member, but do not have the Amazon Video application, it is available on hundreds of devices. From Blu-ray players to game consoles to mobile devices, you have an array of options. For a complete list of devices, along with an option to register one you already have, visit the Amazon Video: Watch Anywhere website.
Watching Your Shows
Once you have successfully subscribed to a channel, you can watch those shows on your Amazon Video app or on the Amazon website. If you are using an app, you should see a section entitled Your Subscriptions on the main page. Just pick the channel, select a show, and start enjoying your trial.
